Overview

Agaricus bisporus, commonly known as the white button mushroom when immature and white in color, is an edible basidiomycete fungus widely cultivated and consumed globally. It is the most familiar commercial mushroom and appears in various forms including brown (cremini) and mature (portobello). The fruiting body contains bioactive compounds such as polysaccharides (notably β-glucans), unsaturated fatty acids like linoleic acid and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), arginine, benzoquinones, and vitamins. Pharmacological studies indicate immunostimulant effects via increased interferon-gamma production; anticancer activity through aromatase inhibition leading to reduced estrogen biosynthesis; hypolipidemic and antiglycemic effects by lowering plasma glucose and cholesterol levels; anti-inflammatory properties; antioxidant activity; enhancement of dendritic cell maturation; potential antibiotic properties due to benzoquinones; and cosmetic applications via tyrosinase enzyme content. Agaricus bisporus extracts have been studied for supportive roles in cancer prevention (especially breast cancer), type 2 diabetes management, hypercholesterolemia reduction, immune system modulation, liver protection support (with some caution regarding rare hepatotoxicity), cardiovascular health promotion, neuroprotection, stress reduction support, osteoporosis prevention support through vitamin D content after UV exposure[1][6][8][10].
