Overview

Agarwood is a fragrant dark resinous heartwood produced by Aquilaria and related species in response to injury or infection. It has been used for thousands of years in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Tibetan medicine, and others. Agarwood contains bioactive compounds including sesquiterpenes and 2-(2-phenylethyl) chromones that contribute to its pharmacological effects. Traditionally and in modern research it is used for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic (pain-relieving), sedative/anxiolytic (calming), antibacterial/antimicrobial, antioxidant, antitumor/anticancer properties as well as immune modulation and neuroprotection. Indications include gastrointestinal disorders (such as diarrhea and dysentery), respiratory conditions (asthma, coughs), pain management (arthritis/rheumatism/joint inflammation), skin diseases (eczema/acne/inflammation), stress relief/anxiety/depression support via aromatherapy or oral use; it also has applications for cardiovascular health and metabolic regulation[1][3][4][5][6][7]. Agarwood oil is distilled from the resinous wood for topical or aromatic use; the wood itself may be powdered or decocted.
