Overview

Agave fructans, specifically agavins, are complex, highly branched neo-fructans derived from the *Agave* genus, particularly *Agave tequilana* Weber var. azul. Unlike the linear β(2-1) linkages found in chicory-derived inulin, agavins contain both β(2-1) and β(2-6) linkages, resulting in a unique architecture that resists enzymatic digestion in the upper gastrointestinal tract. Functioning as prebiotics, they are fermented by the colonic microbiota, leading to the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) such as acetate, propionate, and butyrate. This process is associated with the modulation of gut hormones (e.g., GLP-1 and PYY) that regulate satiety and glucose homeostasis. Clinical evidence suggests that agave fructans can significantly reduce body mass index (BMI), total body fat, and serum triglycerides in obese individuals, making them a promising nutraceutical intervention for metabolic syndrome and weight management.
