Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Agave inulin is a prebiotic dietary fiber derived from the agave plant, primarily composed of fructose polymers. It functions by selectively stimulating the growth and activity of beneficial gut microorganisms, such as *Bifidobacterium* and *Lactobacillus* species, thereby modulating the intestinal microbiota. In clinical research led by Andrea Garcia Contreras at the New Civil Hospital of Guadalajara, agave inulin was evaluated for its efficacy in treating chronic constipation in children with cerebral palsy. The intervention demonstrated significant improvements in stool consistency, reduction in painful defecation, and decreased fecal mass retention. It is typically administered as a powder and is considered a naturally-derived dietary supplement rather than a traditional pharmaceutical drug.
