AGEX-BAT1 is a preclinical cell-based therapy consisting of pluripotent stem cell-derived brown adipose tissue (BAT) cells. Developed by AgeX Therapeutics (a subsidiary of BioTime, which merged with Serina Therapeutics in 2023), the candidate is intended to treat metabolic disorders including Type 2 diabetes and obesity. Brown fat is specialized for thermogenesis, and the transplantation of these cells aims to increase energy expenditure, improve glucose metabolism, and enhance insulin sensitivity. Preclinical studies in murine models, conducted in collaboration with Ohio State University, have also explored its potential to improve cardiac function and address cardiovascular disease.
