Overview
Agiolax Micro is a plant-derived combination laxative developed by Madaus GmbH. It consists of psyllium (Plantago ovata) seeds and husks, which act as a bulk-forming agent, and Tinnevelly senna fruits (Senna alexandrina), which serve as a stimulant laxative. The Micro formulation refers to a microgranule presentation of the standard Agiolax product line. It has been investigated under the name Agio-Prep as a bowel preparation agent prior to colonoscopy, where it was compared against standard polyethylene glycol-based preparations like Moviprep in Phase 3 clinical trials. The mechanism involves increasing stool volume and water retention via psyllium while stimulating colonic motility through the action of sennosides on the intestinal mucosa and enteric nervous system.
