Overview

Agkistrodon halys antivenin is a biological product developed for the treatment of snakebites from the Siberian pit viper (*Agkistrodon halys*, also known as *Gloydius halys*). Developed and manufactured by the Jiangxi Biological Products Research Institute, it consists of purified immunoglobulin fragments, typically F(ab')2, obtained from the plasma of healthy horses immunized with the specific venom. The antivenin works by providing passive immunity; the antibodies bind to and neutralize the circulating toxins in the venom, such as proteases and phospholipases, thereby preventing further systemic toxicity, coagulopathy, and local tissue damage. It is a critical therapeutic agent in regions where *Agkistrodon halys* is endemic, particularly in China and Central Asia.
