Overview

AGL9 is a novel nine-amino acid bioactive peptide (sequence: Ala-Gly-Leu-Gln-Phe-Pro-Val-Gly-Arg) isolated from the enzymatic hydrolysate of the larvae of the edible insect *Allomyrina dichotoma* (Japanese rhinoceros beetle). It has been primarily investigated for its hepatoprotective and anti-obesity properties in preclinical models of metabolic disease. Research indicates that AGL9 mitigates obesity-induced hepatic inflammation and lipid deposition, specifically targeting conditions like Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). Its mechanism involves the activation of the AMPK/Nrf2 signaling pathway, which enhances the phosphorylation of 5' AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), while simultaneously promoting the nuclear translocation of Nrf2 to boost antioxidant enzyme expression and suppress proinflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6.
