aglepristone

Aglepristone is a synthetic, steroidal small molecule that acts as a competitive progesterone receptor antagonist. Developed and marketed by Virbac, it is primarily used in veterinary medicine for the termination of unwanted pregnancy in dogs and cats up to 45 days post-mating. By binding to progesterone receptors with an affinity significantly higher than natural progesterone (3 times higher in dogs and 9 times higher in cats), it blocks the biological effects necessary for maintaining pregnancy without inducing the molecular cascade associated with progesterone. Beyond pregnancy termination, aglepristone is utilized to treat progesterone-dependent conditions such as pyometra (uterine infection) and feline mammary fibroadenomatosis. It also exhibits some antiglucocorticoid activity and has been investigated for potential use in treating insulin-resistant diabetes mellitus and acromegaly in small animals.
