Overview

Agmatine is a naturally occurring chemical compound formed by the decarboxylation of the amino acid L-arginine, catalyzed by arginine decarboxylase. It is present in many organisms and acts as a neuromodulator and neurotransmitter. Agmatine exerts modulatory effects on multiple molecular targets, including neurotransmitter systems, ion channels, nitric oxide (NO) synthesis (as an inhibitor of NO synthase), polyamine metabolism, and imidazoline receptors (as an endogenous agonist). Pharmacologically, it has been studied for its potential roles in lowering blood glucose and blood pressure, diuresis, anti-inflammation, antidepressant effects, inhibition of cell proliferation, muscle growth support (especially among athletes), appetite stimulation, mood support, and alleviation of neuropathic pain. It also shows antagonistic activity at N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors[1][2][6][7][9].
