Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Agniraft is an oral suspension formulation containing sodium alginate, sodium bicarbonate, and calcium carbonate, developed by Aganit Pharma. It is indicated for the rapid and long-lasting relief of heartburn, acid indigestion, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Upon ingestion, the active ingredients work through a dual physical and chemical mechanism: sodium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate chemically neutralize excess gastric hydrochloric acid, while sodium alginate reacts with the acidic environment to form a viscous, low-density alginic acid gel raft. This raft floats on top of the stomach contents, physically preventing the reflux of acid, pepsin, and bile into the esophagus. The calcium ions released from calcium carbonate further strengthen the gel raft by cross-linking the alginate polymer, ensuring a durable barrier that lasts for up to four hours.
