Overview

aH5N8c is a monovalent, inactivated influenza A (H5N8) virus vaccine developed for the prevention of disease caused by the H5N8 subtype of avian influenza. It is based on an inactivated (killed) strain of the H5N8 virus—specifically, the A/Astrakhan/3212/2020 (H5N8)-like strain (clade 2.3.4.4b)—and is formulated to stimulate an immune response that protects against bird flu in humans at risk of exposure[4][7]. The vaccine uses immunostimulant mechanisms and may be adjuvanted to enhance immunogenicity[6][7]. It is administered as two intramuscular doses at least three weeks apart and has been approved for use in adults within several European countries since October 2023[4][7].
