Overview

AHG0001 is a specific strain of anaerobic gut bacteria isolated from healthy human fecal samples, currently under investigation for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Developed by researchers at the University of Queensland and the Mater Research Institute, AHG0001 produces bioactive small molecules that demonstrate potent immunomodulatory effects. Specifically, culture supernatants from this strain have been shown to suppress NF-κB activation and reduce IL-8 secretion in colonic epithelial cells and patient-derived organoids. In preclinical studies using the Winnie mouse model of spontaneous colitis, rectal administration of AHG0001 supernatants significantly reduced disease activity and histological inflammation. A specific small molecule bioactive produced by the strain has been identified with an IC50 of 3 nM.
