Overview
Ahnjeonbaekho-tang (AJBHT) is a traditional Korean herbal medicine (Hanbang) formulation developed as an alternative therapy for Graves' disease, particularly for patients who experience adverse side effects from conventional antithyroid drugs such as methimazole (MMI) and propylthiouracil (PTU). AJBHT is a modified version of the classical 'Baekho-tang' formula. Mechanistically, it suppresses thyroid hormone synthesis by inhibiting the production of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and the expression of thyroglobulin (Tg) mRNA in thyroid cells. Clinical studies have demonstrated that treatment with AJBHT leads to a significant reduction in serum triiodothyronine (T3) and free thyroxine (FT4) levels, accompanied by an increase in thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels, thereby helping to normalize thyroid function in hyperthyroid patients.
