Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Aihengping (HR18034) is an extended-release liposomal formulation of the amide-type local anesthetic bupivacaine, developed by Jiangsu Hengrui Medicine. It utilizes multivesicular liposome (MVL) technology to encapsulate bupivacaine, providing a sustained release that extends the duration of analgesia for up to 72 hours post-administration. Bupivacaine works by reversibly binding to and blocking voltage-gated sodium channels on the internal surface of nerve cell membranes. This blockade prevents the influx of sodium ions, thereby inhibiting the depolarization of the nerve membrane and the subsequent conduction of pain impulses. Aihengping was approved by the NMPA in China in 2024 for local infiltration analgesia to manage postoperative pain, specifically following bunionectomy, and is being investigated for broader applications in regional nerve blocks, such as paravertebral blocks for thoracic surgery.
