Overview

Ainuovirine (KM-023) is a next-generation non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) developed for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection. It was originally developed by Kainos Medicine and later transferred to Jiangsu Aidea Pharmaceutical for further development and commercialization in China. Ainuovirine acts by inhibiting the HIV-1 reverse transcriptase enzyme, thereby blocking viral replication. The drug has demonstrated efficacy against laboratory strains and clinical isolates of HIV-1, including those with the K103N mutation that confers resistance to efavirenz. Clinical trials have shown that it is generally well tolerated with favorable safety and pharmacokinetic profiles. It received marketing authorization in China in June 2021 as part of combination antiretroviral therapy[5][7].
