Drug intelligence / Profile preview
AIP-1 (anti-inflammatory protein-1) is a recombinant, hookworm-derived protein with immunomodulatory properties. Originally identified as a tissue inhibitor of metalloproteases (TIMP)-like protein (Ac-TMP-1) secreted by the canine hookworm *Ancylostoma caninum*, as well as its human hookworm homolog *Necator americanus* (Na-AIP-1), AIP-1 does not possess metalloprotease inhibitory activity. Instead, it acts as an immunomodulator that promotes the accumulation of CD4+Foxp3+ regulatory T cells (Tregs) and stimulates the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-10 (IL-10), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta), and thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP). AIP-1 has demonstrated preclinical efficacy in animal models of inflammatory bowel disease (colitis), rheumatoid arthritis, and Chagas disease-associated myocarditis and liver inflammation.
