Overview

AIR-DNase is described as a recombinant human deoxyribonuclease I (rhDNase), an enzyme that selectively cleaves extracellular DNA. This mechanism is evidenced in the context of cystic fibrosis and other pulmonary diseases, where such extracellular DNA, released from dying leukocytes, increases mucus viscosity and exacerbates inflammation. AIR-DNase is likely a branded or investigational recombinant human DNase I intended for inhalation or aerosolized delivery, acting to enzymatically degrade DNA in airway secretions, reduce viscosity, and assist mucociliary clearance. It may be developed in analogy to other rhDNase products (such as dornase alfa/Pulmozyme) for indications such as cystic fibrosis or acute respiratory distress syndrome by targeting neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs)[1][2][3][4].
