Overview

The Airlangga H5N1 vaccine is a prototype or 'seed' virus developed for the production of a human avian influenza vaccine. Created by researchers at Airlangga University's (Unair) Avian Influenza Research Center in Indonesia, the vaccine was developed through the reconstruction of a local Indonesian H5N1 virus strain. The project, supported by Japanese molecular biologists and announced in 2011, aimed to provide the Indonesian government and the state-owned pharmaceutical company Bio Farma with a high-yield seed for mass production. The vaccine is designed to elicit an immune response against the hemagglutinin and neuraminidase proteins of the H5N1 virus, serving as a critical component for pandemic preparedness against Influenza A (H5N1) infections.
