Overview

Ajmalicine (also known as raubasine) is a monoterpenoid indole alkaloid isolated from several Rauvolfia and Catharanthus species. It is a small molecule drug primarily used as an antihypertensive agent for the treatment of high blood pressure and has also been applied in the management of circulatory disorders such as cerebrovascular and peripheral vascular diseases. Ajmalicine acts mainly as a selective alpha1-adrenergic receptor antagonist (alpha1-adrenoceptor antagonist), leading to vasodilation and improved cerebral blood flow. It has also demonstrated anticonvulsant properties in animal studies. In some formulations (notably combinations with almitrine), it has been used to enhance cerebral oxygenation and glucose uptake in elderly patients with cognitive impairment or other neurosensory deficits[1][2][3][6][7].
