Somatropin is a recombinant form of human growth hormone (hGH) produced using recombinant DNA technology. It acts as a replacement therapy for endogenous growth hormone in individuals with deficiency or failure to produce sufficient amounts. Somatropin binds to the growth hormone receptor and stimulates production of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), promoting linear bone and tissue growth in children and metabolic effects in adults. It is primarily indicated for pediatric and adult patients with growth hormone deficiency but is also used for conditions such as Turner syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS), Noonan syndrome, chronic kidney disease-related short stature in children prior to puberty or renal transplantation; idiopathic short stature; cachexia associated with AIDS; short bowel syndrome; burns with nitrogen retention needs; hypopituitarism; SHOX deficiency; and unintentional weight loss[1][3][4][5].
