Overview

AK5 small interfering RNA is a gene-silencing tool that utilizes the RNA interference (RNAi) pathway to specifically target and reduce the expression of Adenylate kinase 5 (AK5). AK5 is a phosphotransferase involved in maintaining adenine nucleotide homeostasis and has been identified as an independent genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. Research indicates that silencing AK5 in microglial cells attenuates pro-inflammatory responses, such as the production of nitric oxide and tumor necrosis factor-alpha, while enhancing phagocytic activity and inducing metabolic reprogramming. While currently utilized primarily in research settings to investigate neuroinflammation and metabolic dysfunction, AK5-targeted siRNA represents a potential therapeutic strategy for the treatment or prevention of Alzheimer's disease.
