Overview
Akanin B is a botanical drug candidate developed by Beijing Jinbencao Traditional Chinese Medicine Technology Development Co., Ltd. for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B (CHB). It is a purified extract derived from the roots of *Lithospermum erythrorhizon* (Zicao), a plant long used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The formulation primarily consists of naphthoquinone compounds, including shikonin and its various derivatives (such as acetylshikonin). Akanin B exerts its therapeutic effects by inhibiting the replication of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA and reducing the expression and secretion of viral antigens, specifically the surface antigen (HBsAg) and the e antigen (HBeAg). Clinical development in China has progressed through Phase II and Phase III trials, where the drug has been evaluated for its ability to improve liver function, reduce viral load, and promote seroconversion in patients with chronic HBV infection, often showing a favorable safety profile compared to standard nucleoside analogs.
