AKB-9778 + ranibizumab is a combination therapy for diabetic macular edema (DME). AKB-9778 is a small-molecule vascular endothelial protein tyrosine phosphatase (VE-PTP) inhibitor that activates the Tie2 receptor. By inhibiting VE-PTP, AKB-9778 promotes vascular stabilization and protects against vascular leak and pathologic angiogenesis. Ranibizumab is an anti-VEGF agent administered intravitreally. The combination has shown enhanced efficacy in reducing macular edema compared to either agent alone, with a significant reduction in central subfield thickness (CST) in clinical trials.
