AKBA-Incense

AKBA-Incense is a natural product formulation containing 30% 3-acetyl-11-keto-ß-boswellic acid (AKBA), an active component derived from the oleogum resin of Boswellia trees, commonly known as frankincense or luban. Developed by Sultan Qaboos University and manufactured by ZeinPharma, the drug is currently being investigated in Phase I/II clinical trials for the treatment of nephrolithiasis (renal stones). AKBA functions as a selective inhibitor of 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO), an enzyme central to the biosynthesis of pro-inflammatory leukotrienes. By modulating inflammatory pathways and potentially exerting antispasmodic or litholytic effects, AKBA-Incense is being evaluated for its ability to reduce stone size and facilitate the passage of both radiopaque and radiolucent renal stones.
