Overview

Akebia quinata extract (AQE) is a botanical extract derived from the *Akebia quinata* plant, a woody vine native to East Asia and used in traditional Korean and Chinese medicine. The extract contains a variety of bioactive compounds, including saponins (such as akequintoside D), triterpenoids (oleanolic acid, hederagenin), and phenolic acids (chlorogenic acid). AQE is primarily investigated for its anti-obesity and hypolipidemic properties, which are mediated through the activation of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway. This activation leads to the inhibition of adipogenesis and the enhancement of fatty acid oxidation via the regulation of targets like acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα). Additionally, the extract has demonstrated neuroprotective and anti-fatigue potential, possibly through the modulation of BDNF-TrkB signaling, and possesses antioxidant, analgesic, and diuretic activities.
