Overview

Akiva is a topical insect repellent developed by LivFul Inc. that utilizes the patented STAYTEC controlled-release technology. The product contains 20% IR3535 (ethyl butylacetylaminopropionate), a small molecule repellent supplied by Merck KGaA. STAYTEC technology employs micro-encapsulation within a polymeric shell to create a sustained-release formulation that reduces evaporation from the skin surface and limits systemic absorption. This mechanism allows the repellent to remain effective for up to 14 hours, significantly longer than standard formulations. Clinical studies conducted in Ghana demonstrated 98-100% repellency against *Anopheles gambiae* mosquitoes, the primary malaria vector in Africa. Although marketed as a non-pharmaceutical consumer product, it is intended as a public health intervention to complement existing malaria control measures such as insecticide-treated bed nets and indoor residual spraying.
