Overview

Akkermansia muciniphila AKK PROBIO is a live biotherapeutic probiotic formulation containing the Gram-negative, anaerobic bacterium *Akkermansia muciniphila*. It is currently being evaluated in clinical trials for the treatment of obesity, dyslipidemia, and impaired glucose metabolism. *A. muciniphila* naturally inhabits the mucus layer of the human gut, where it degrades mucin to produce beneficial short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) like acetate and propionate. The mechanism of action involves enhancing gut barrier integrity, thereby reducing the translocation of pro-inflammatory lipopolysaccharides (LPS) into the bloodstream (metabolic endotoxemia). Additionally, specific membrane proteins of the bacterium, such as Amuc_1100, have been shown to interact with Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) to improve insulin sensitivity and glucose homeostasis.
