Akkermansia muciniphila Akk11 is a specific strain of the gut bacterium *Akkermansia muciniphila* being investigated as a live biotherapeutic product (LBP) for the treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD). It exerts neuroprotective effects through the gut-brain axis by modulating the intestinal environment and systemic inflammatory responses. Preclinical studies in MPTP-induced PD mouse models demonstrate that Akk11 administration significantly improves motor deficits, reduces the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra, and suppresses microglial activation. The primary mechanism of action involves the inhibition of the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway in microglia, which leads to a reduction in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and TNF-α. Additionally, Akk11 helps maintain colonic barrier integrity, addressing the gut dysbiosis often associated with PD progression.
