Overview

Akkermansia muciniphila p*-βL strain is a specific strain of the Gram-negative, anaerobic bacterium Akkermansia muciniphila, belonging to the phylum Verrucomicrobia. The p*-βL designation appears to refer to a variant with a TEM-type β-lactamase gene promoter or related antibiotic resistance determinant. Akkermansia muciniphila is recognized as a next-generation probiotic with demonstrated strain-specific effects on host metabolism, immune modulation, and gut barrier integrity. Specific strains show potential in managing obesity, metabolic disorders, and inflammation, with evidence suggesting modulation of cytokines, gut microbiota normalization, tight junction protein expression, and short chain fatty acid production, but the p*-βL strain specifically is associated with altered phenotypes after antibiotic selection, such as reduced anti-obesity effect. Development is ongoing for differentiated clinical applications, but strain-dependent effects are critical, and clinical impact can vary[5][1][3][7].
