Overview

WST01 is a specific strain of the Gram-negative, anaerobic bacterium *Akkermansia muciniphila* developed as a live biotherapeutic product (LBP) by Wanshengtai Biotechnology. It is primarily investigated for the treatment of metabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes, obesity, and overweight conditions. *A. muciniphila* is a natural inhabitant of the human gut that resides in the mucus layer and plays a critical role in maintaining intestinal barrier integrity and metabolic homeostasis. WST01 supplementation aims to restore or increase the abundance of this bacterium in the gut, which has been linked to improved insulin sensitivity, reduced systemic inflammation, and increased secretion of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1). Clinical study results indicate that the efficacy of WST01 in reducing body weight and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) may be dependent on the patient's baseline levels of *Akkermansia* in the gut microbiota.
