Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Akkerstor is a probiotic/postbiotic product developed by Blue Heron Pharmaceuticals, featuring a proprietary strain of *Akkermansia muciniphila*. This bacterium is a key member of the gut microbiota that colonizes the mucosal layer of the gastrointestinal tract. Akkerstor is primarily aimed at improving metabolic health, addressing conditions such as obesity, insulin resistance, and systemic inflammation. Its mechanism of action involves the reinforcement of the intestinal barrier, which reduces the translocation of pro-inflammatory lipopolysaccharides (LPS) into the bloodstream (metabolic endotoxemia). Specifically, the outer membrane protein Amuc_1100 of *A. muciniphila* has been shown to interact with Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2), enhancing tight junction expression. The product is typically provided in a pasteurized (heat-killed) form, which has been found in clinical studies to be as effective as, or more effective than, the live bacterium in improving metabolic parameters.
