AKP-020 is a novel vanadium-based small molecule compound that was developed by Akesis Pharmaceuticals as a potential treatment for Type 2 diabetes. Vanadium compounds are recognized for their insulin-mimetic properties, primarily acting through the inhibition of protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs), which enhances insulin receptor phosphorylation and downstream signaling pathways. In 2008, Akesis Pharmaceuticals initiated a 13-week preclinical safety program for AKP-020 in collaboration with Charles River Laboratories. However, development of the compound appears to have been discontinued as the company ceased active operations and no further clinical progress has been reported since the late 2000s.
