Overview

AKP-021 is a small molecule prostaglandin F2α (FP) receptor antagonist being developed by ASKA Pharmaceutical for the treatment of dysmenorrhea. Prostaglandin F2α is a potent stimulator of uterine smooth muscle contraction and is a key mediator in the pathophysiology of primary dysmenorrhea, where its overproduction leads to uterine hypercontractility, reduced blood flow, and significant pelvic pain. By selectively antagonizing the FP receptor, AKP-021 is intended to inhibit these contractions and alleviate associated symptoms. As of 2024, the compound is in Phase I clinical development, with studies evaluating its safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics in healthy volunteers, including both Japanese and Caucasian populations.
