Overview
AL-3778 (formerly known as NVR 3-778) is a first-in-class small molecule core protein inhibitor developed for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. It acts as a direct-acting antiviral agent by targeting the HBV core protein, leading to aberrant capsid assembly and inhibition of HBV DNA replication. This mechanism disrupts several core-mediated functions in the HBV life cycle. Clinical studies have shown that AL-3778 reduces serum HBV DNA and RNA levels in patients with chronic hepatitis B, with enhanced effects when combined with pegylated interferon alpha (PegIFN). The drug was developed by Alios Biopharma and Johnson & Johnson[1][2][5].
