Overview

AL-38583 is an investigational small molecule antagonist of the C-C chemokine receptor type 3 (CCR3), developed by Alcon Research for the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis. CCR3 is a G protein-coupled receptor primarily expressed on eosinophils, basophils, and Th2 cells, and it plays a pivotal role in the recruitment of these inflammatory cells to the ocular surface during allergic reactions. By blocking the interaction between CCR3 and its ligands, such as eotaxin, AL-38583 aims to inhibit the late-phase inflammatory response characterized by eosinophil infiltration. The compound was evaluated in a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT00471107) using a conjunctival allergen challenge (CAC) model to assess its efficacy in reducing tear eosinophil counts. Despite completing Phase 2 testing in 2007, no further clinical development has been reported, suggesting the program has been discontinued.
