Drug intelligence / Profile preview
AL-39256 is a small molecule serotonin 5-HT2 receptor agonist developed by Alcon Research for the treatment of open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. It was designed to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) by stimulating 5-HT2 receptors in the eye, a mechanism believed to enhance the uveoscleral outflow of aqueous humor. The compound was evaluated in a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT00414414) to assess its safety and IOP-lowering efficacy compared to latanoprost, a standard prostaglandin analog, and a vehicle control. Clinical development of AL-39256 appears to have been terminated following the completion of this Phase 2 study in 2007.
