AL-4943A vehicle is the placebo control formulation used in clinical trials for AL-4943A, a high-concentration (0.77%) ophthalmic solution of olopatadine hydrochloride developed by Alcon Research and marketed under the brand name Pazeo. As a vehicle, it contains the same inactive ingredients (excipients) as the active drug product but lacks the active pharmaceutical ingredient, olopatadine. It was primarily utilized in Phase 3 clinical studies, including those using the Conjunctival Allergen Challenge (CAC) model, to establish a baseline for safety and efficacy in the treatment of ocular itching associated with allergic conjunctivitis. The vehicle serves as a critical comparator to differentiate the pharmacological effects of the antihistamine from the physical effects of the ophthalmic solution itself.
