Drug intelligence / Profile preview
AL001 is a patented ionic cocrystal formulation that delivers a therapeutic combination of lithium, salicylate, and L-proline. It is designed to provide the clinical benefits of marketed lithium salts while reducing or avoiding the toxicities typically associated with traditional lithium therapies. The unique formulation aims to favorably distribute lithium in the brain with lower exposure to other organs, improving safety and potentially eliminating the need for intensive drug monitoring. Lithium in AL001 acts primarily by inhibiting glycogen synthase kinase 3 alpha and beta (GSK3A/B) and inositol mono/polyphosphatase (IMPase/IPPase), mechanisms believed relevant for neuroprotection and mood stabilization. The drug is being developed as an oral therapy for Alzheimer’s disease, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder (MDD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Preclinical data suggest superior efficacy over standard lithium carbonate in animal models of cognitive impairment[1][3][5][7].
