AL102-PDT (also known as ALH-L1005) is a botanical drug candidate being developed by AngioLab for the treatment of periodontitis and periodontal disease. It is a small molecule botanical extract designed to inhibit multiple matrix metalloproteinases, specifically MMP-1, MMP-8, MMP-9, and MMP-13. By targeting these enzymes, the drug aims to prevent the breakdown of connective tissue and bone resorption associated with chronic inflammation in the gums. Preclinical studies in beagle dogs demonstrated superior efficacy compared to doxycycline, an existing FDA-approved MMP inhibitor for periodontitis. The drug has progressed into Phase IIa clinical trials.
