AL164 (also known as AL064) is a preclinical-stage small interfering RNA (siRNA) therapeutic candidate being developed by Alector for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, specifically tauopathies such as Alzheimer's disease. The drug is designed to target the MAPT gene, which encodes the Tau protein. In tauopathies, Tau protein aggregates into toxic neurofibrillary tangles that correlate with cognitive decline and neuronal loss. By utilizing the RNA interference (RNAi) pathway to knockdown Tau expression at the mRNA level, AL164 aims to reduce the overall burden of Tau pathology in the brain, potentially slowing or halting disease progression.
