Overview

Alanine ethyl ester butyrate is a bioactive ionic liquid (BIL) composed of an L-alanine ethyl ester cation and a butyrate anion. It is primarily utilized in pharmaceutical research as a multifunctional drug delivery vehicle and therapeutic agent. Developed to address the solubility and bioavailability challenges of lipophilic compounds, such as the anti-cancer agent glycyrol, this ionic liquid functions as both a specialized solvent and a bioactive component. The butyrate moiety provides intrinsic therapeutic activity by acting as a histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor and an agonist of free fatty acid receptors (FFAR2/FFAR3), which collectively promote apoptosis and inhibit proliferation in malignant cells. Research has demonstrated its potential in enhancing the oral delivery and synergistic anti-tumor efficacy of co-administered drugs, particularly in models of colorectal cancer.
