Albendazole is a broad-spectrum benzimidazole anthelmintic used to treat a variety of parasitic worm infections, including neurocysticercosis (caused by the pork tapeworm) and cystic hydatid disease (caused by the dog tapeworm)[1][2][3][4]. It is also used for other helminth infections and has activity against some protozoa[5]. Albendazole works by binding to the colchicine-sensitive site of beta-tubulin in susceptible parasites, inhibiting microtubule polymerization. This disrupts glucose uptake and depletes glycogen stores, leading to energy depletion, immobilization, and death of the parasite[3][5][6]. The drug may also impair cell division in parasites by preventing spindle fiber formation[5].
