Overview

Albiglutide is a recombinant fusion protein and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It consists of a dipeptidyl peptidase-4-resistant GLP-1 dimer fused to human albumin, which prolongs its half-life and allows for once-weekly subcutaneous administration. Albiglutide increases glucose-dependent insulin secretion and slows gastric emptying by activating the GLP-1 receptor. It was developed by GlaxoSmithKline and marketed under the brand names Tanzeum (US) and Eperzan (EU). The drug has been discontinued[2][3][5][6].
