Overview

**Albiglutide + biguanide** refers to a fixed or co-administered combination of albiglutide, a long-acting glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor (GLP-1R) agonist, and a drug from the biguanide class, typically metformin. This combination is used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control. **Albiglutide** promotes glucose-dependent insulin secretion and slows gastric emptying, while **biguanides** (most notably metformin) reduce hepatic glucose production and improve insulin sensitivity. The combination leverages complementary mechanisms to achieve better glycemic control than either agent alone, and has been studied and marketed with metformin in typical dual therapy regimens for type 2 diabetes. Albiglutide was marketed under brand names Tanzeum (US) and Eperzan (EU) by GlaxoSmithKline, but has since been discontinued. Biguanides remain widely prescribed, with metformin as the leading agent. This combination is administered as separate agents rather than as a true single "combination product."
