Overview

Albinterferon alfa-2b is a long-acting, recombinant fusion protein consisting of interferon alpha-2b genetically fused to human serum albumin. This design extends the half-life of interferon alpha, allowing for less frequent dosing compared to conventional or pegylated forms. The drug exerts antiviral and immunomodulatory effects by binding to type I interferon receptors on cell surfaces, leading to the expression of genes that mediate antiviral, antiproliferative, and immune-modulating responses. Albinterferon alfa-2b was developed as a potential treatment for chronic hepatitis C and was investigated as an alternative to pegylated interferons. Development was discontinued in 2010 following regulatory feedback[1][2][4][5].
