Albisec

Albisec is an oral fixed-dose combination medication containing the triazole antifungal agent itraconazole and the nitroimidazole anti-infective agent secnidazole. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of mixed vaginal infections, including vulvovaginal candidiasis, bacterial vaginosis, and trichomoniasis. Itraconazole exerts its fungistatic effect by inhibiting the enzyme sterol 14-alpha-demethylase (CYP51), which is responsible for converting lanosterol to ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes. Secnidazole is a nitroimidazole derivative that acts against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa; its mechanism involves the intracellular reduction of its nitro group to reactive intermediates that cause DNA strand breakage and inhibit nucleic acid synthesis. Albisec is marketed by Calox International and is typically administered as a short-course oral therapy to provide comprehensive coverage against the most common causes of infectious vaginitis.
