The intervention referred to as albumin + sodium chloride-Bayside Health-pressure ulcer represents a clinical trial comparison between 4% human albumin solution and 0.9% sodium chloride (normal saline) for fluid resuscitation in critically ill patients. This specific investigation was conducted as a substudy of the landmark Saline versus Albumin Fluid Evaluation (SAFE) trial, with Bayside Health (The Alfred Hospital) serving as a lead institution. The study aimed to determine if the choice of resuscitation fluid—specifically a colloid (albumin) versus a crystalloid (saline)—influenced the incidence and severity of pressure ulcers in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients. Albumin is a human-derived protein that increases intravascular oncotic pressure, which may help reduce tissue edema and improve microcirculation, potentially mitigating the risk of pressure injuries. Sodium chloride is a standard crystalloid solution used to expand extracellular fluid volume. The primary SAFE trial found no significant difference in 28-day mortality between the two fluids, and this substudy focused on secondary outcomes related to skin integrity.
