Albumin aggregated (Macroaggregated Albumin or MAA) is a sterile, non-pyrogenic preparation of aggregated human serum albumin used as a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical precursor. When radiolabeled with Technetium-99m (Tc-99m), it forms Technetium Tc 99m Albumin Aggregated Injection. The particles, typically ranging from 10 to 90 micrometers in size, are administered intravenously and become trapped in the pulmonary capillary bed through a process of temporary microembolization. This allows for lung scintigraphy to evaluate pulmonary perfusion, aiding in the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism and other perfusion defects. It is also used via intraperitoneal injection to assess the patency of peritoneovenous shunts in patients with portal-hypertensive ascites.
