This combination therapy consists of albumin-bound paclitaxel (nab-paclitaxel) and pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD). Albumin-bound paclitaxel is a solvent-free, nanoparticle formulation of paclitaxel that promotes microtubule assembly and stabilizes them against depolymerization, thereby inhibiting cell division. Pegylated liposomal doxorubicin is an anthracycline antibiotic encapsulated in liposomes with surface-bound polyethylene glycol (PEG), which extends its circulation time and enhances tumor accumulation. Doxorubicin works by intercalating DNA and inhibiting topoisomerase II, leading to DNA strand breaks and apoptosis. This specific combination has been investigated by the Shaanxi Provincial Cancer Hospital as a treatment for platinum-resistant recurrent gynecological cancers, including ovarian cancer, fallopian tube carcinoma, and primary peritoneal carcinoma, aiming to improve efficacy while managing the toxicity profiles associated with traditional taxane and anthracycline therapies.
